How to Track a Phone When It's Lost or Stolen

Your smartphone contains a GPS receiver and transmitter that provide access to real-time navigation and other location-based services on iOS and Android phones. If your phone is lost or stolen, you can remotely activate a GPS tracker to actively track your phone's location.

This means you can always check if the target device is active and connected to the wireless network. You can combine multiple accounts so friends and family can follow each other.

If the battery is completely discharged, the GPS location tracking service will obviously not work, but the service can record the last known location of the device.

Cell phone tracking services have been added to both iOS and Android phones, but the features are slightly different.

Let's take a look at how to track your phone or tablet on both platforms.

Tracking an iPhone

Apple tracking is enabled through the Find My app, which can be paired with Apple Watch, Mac computers, and iOS devices such as AirPods and AirTags.

The following tracking features are available on iOS:

• View Location

• Play Sound

• Mark as Lost (Lost Mode)

• Remote Cleaning

• Reporting the Results

• Get Alerts when you fall Behind

These features require a second device connected to your Apple account.

Find settings on iOS and Mac with Apple support:

1. Open the Settings App.

2. Tap your name, and then tap Find Me.

3. If you want friends and family to know your mobile location, turn on Share my location.

4. Tap Find my [device], then turn on Find my [device].

5. Turn on Find My Network to see your devices even when they are offline. (The Find Me Network is an anonymous, encrypted network of hundreds of millions of Apple devices that helps you locate your device.)

6. Turn on Send last location to receive your device's location to Apple when the battery is low.

To find your lost device on a map, make sure Location Services is turned on.

To do this, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Location services and enable location services. If you use Find my, you won't be able to see your device's location if it's been more than

7 days since the last location was sent to Apple.

If your iPhone won't reset easily, you can also wipe it remotely.

1. Follow the above steps to recover your lost device.

NOTE: This amount is non-refundable.

2. Open the Find Me app and select the Devices tab.

3. Select the device you want to disable remotely.

4. Scroll down and select Turn off this device.

5. Select Turn off this [device].

If your device is running iOS 15 or later, the Find It app can detect and track it even after you clean up your content.

Android Cell Phone Tracking

The Find My Android feature allows users to remotely track, lock or disable their smartphone or tablet. All this can be done online using the Google account associated with the target device.

Google Support explains the steps you need to follow to track your Android device.

To find your Android Device, check these Devices:

• You are signed in to your Google Account.

• The locations are:

• "Find my device" feature is enabled.

• In implementation

• Connected to cellular data or Wi-Fi

• Appears on Google Play

Turn on save last location to find your last location, even if your device is turned off or not connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi.

After checking the accuracy of all these parameters, the monitoring process can begin.

1. Go to android.com/find in your browser or download the Find My Device app for your second phone from the Google Play Store.

2. Sign in to your Google account.

• Locations are approximate and may not be exact.

• If you can't find your device, you can find its last known location (if available).

As follows:

1. A lost Android phone is reported.

2. Maps provide information about your device's location.

• If you have multiple devices: Select the missing device at the top of the sidebar.

• If the lost device has multiple user profiles, sign in with the Google Account shown in your main or personal profile.

Then choose what you want to do.

• When prompted, tap Turn on lock and turn it off.

• Play sound: Allows the device to play at full volume for 5 minutes, even if set to silent or vibrate mode.

• Secure device: Lock your device with a PIN or password.

If you don't have a lock, you can install one. You can add a message or device number to your lock screen to help others recover your device.

• Erase device: Permanently erases all data on the device, but cannot erase the SD card.  If you turn off a device, Find My Device will not work on that device.
